I run Pathfinder with a list of custom rules and 3rd party replacement content (Vancian casting is so badly executed) in a custom setting. And I still have no freaking idea how to make crafting not suck! I don't buy a ton of new games in general, and I know the market oughtn't cater to me. I just always like it when games coming out are interesting rather than "reliable". 5e gives me nothing that I couldn't do myself with a big red marker and a 3.5e book, for instance. Cutting out complexity could have been an overall improvement worth respecting, but they took it way too far for my tastes. ParanoidObsessive posted... New things can just as easily be terrible in "art" as well, though. You can still learn from them? But yeah, missteps are sort of the price of entry. If you try something new you might fail. And that's not even getting into a long, philosophical discussion about what "art" is in the first place, and if we even really HAVE "art" in the modern era when most artistic endeavor is powered more by financial gain or for entertainment purposes, which have their own aesthetic requirements. Sturgeon's Law explains that one. Movies and games and such can be art, really any medium can, but 90% of it is crap. In its basest form, art is something valuable for its emotional impact. We tend to not use the word "art" on the 90% that's crap, but I think it still technically applies to entertainment. Ironman XCOM is one of the few times I really felt good pressure from a save system. I'm also the sort who kinda sometimes takes save scumming too far when I get frustrated... I should not be trusted with such power. But I also really liked what they did in They Bleed Pixels. You got "style points" for your kills if you did them quickly and didn't spam, and after enough you could plop down a checkpoint. It's really neat that you don't just keep trying to make it to the next checkpoint, which encourages skipping past and ignoring obstacles (Dark Souls is a huge offender). Instead you're encouraged to keep trying until you do enough awesome shit. That's just fun. Plus, putting down your own checkpoint right in front of an area you're having trouble with is a neat way to manage your own difficulty with clever play. I think Ori and the Blind Forest does something similar, but has the style points also used for other things too. Adds very little fun gameplay, and inventory management in general is very "solo play" which I don't like to encourage. Reflavoring the bag to an orb is fine, whatever their cute little hearts desire. I wouldn't remove them, since players won't use them unless there's a reason to, and they feel neat so I want to encourage them. Though making them optional and giving them bonus stats could work. It's so harmless to require it that I usually just do so in case I want to play with the mechanic at some point. Rare materials, getting captured and losing materials, expensive materials, and such work. Not a fan of inventory management and travel preparation usually. Inventory management being the micromanaging of amounts of supplies and consumables you'll need. Working around is different from having an employer sponsor you for citizenship. They use the phrase "highly educated" about every other sentence to make sure you know it's not for everyone. The chiropractor did a lot of hovering his hands over my body, calling it a Reiki technique. Okay. The biggest bit though was the blatant cold reading. Extremely leading questions that he'd follow up with blatantly obvious "insights". When I questioned him, he assured me that he would just tell me not to bother coming back if he believed he couldn't help me, and that he was on my side. He ended up recommending about $100 worth of herbal pills that didn't really do anything (gosh my father was enamored with the pills though).
